A tailor-made illustration that transforms memories and passions into a unique work of aviation and motoring.
Creating a gift that is special and truly impressive is never easy, especially when it's for a pilot friend like Gabriele Gardel.
Last year, he gave us a unique experience, and I wanted to thank him in an equally unique way: by creating a custom illustration that encapsulated his passion for flying, his most precious memories, and the fun moments of his life.
In the end, the best description of the painting came from his wife, with a phrase that is both an explanation and the most beautiful compliment I could ever hope to receive: “It's like looking at a whole life in a cockpit!” Wow, how exciting!

The idea of a personalized gift
The inspiration for this painting came from my desire to transform my gratitude into a truly personal gift. It wasn't just about drawing an airplane, but creating a work that told Gabriele's story through the details of his life, his affections, and his passions.
This isn't the first cockpit I've drawn: first there was the cockpit of the Pilatus P3 for Marc, which I also turned into a limited edition numbered print (which I've never mentioned here on the website... will I find the time to remedy that?). After that, I created a commissioned painting for Cedric, this time the cockpit of a Falcon 6X. (I present it properly in this video in italian).
However, this was somehow even more exciting than the previous ones, thanks to the collaboration with Gabriele's wife! She was a huge help because she provided me with photos, messages, and voice messages, telling me stories about Gabriele's life.

Photo: Gabriele, second from left, holds the trophy for first place in his category at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
From motor racing victories to cherished family moments, to funny and personal memories: every piece of information made the drawing richer in emotion and detail. Thanks to her, the final picture is not just a detailed cockpit, but a true portrait of her life.
Creating a cockpit that tells a story - From idea to sketch
The first step was to create the structure of the actual cockpit of the Cirrus SR22T G7. Then I inserted all the symbols and memories that came to mind and that Gabriele's wife passed on to me into this structure.
A very important step in making the design pleasing is the distribution of weights, or rather the black and dark parts: you have to maintain balance so that no part is too dark or too empty. I also wanted to convey a sense of depth.
Funny and amusing elements
Some details in the design are “just” funny and amusing elements, inserted into a cockpit even though they are extremely out of place. Some examples?
-
The rearview mirror: let's be honest... in some aircraft, such as the Pilatus P3 used for training and aerobatics or the aircraft used to tow gliders, there may be mirrors to give you an idea of what is happening behind you... but in a Cirrus, used for leisure flights, it is a completely useless item!
-
The Swiss highway sticker: it's obvious that you don't take a plane on the motorway... and that's why the motorway sticker stuck on the windshield is something that can make you smile!
-
A life jacket and a rubber duck: the safety systems in case of ditching are definitely more professional and effective than the ones I have depicted... but that's exactly why they make everything more fun!
Private elements
There are also lots (and I mean lots!) of symbols linked to Gabriele's past, his passions, and his experiences. Those who know him are aware of his life linked to motor racing, and can therefore recognize at least the most obvious symbols:
-
references to the Le Mans 24 Hours trophy, which Gabriele won twice (2010 and 2011)
-
the FIA (International Automobile Federation) trophy: when he won the championship in 2005
-
the Autosprint Casco d'Oro trophy, a sort of “Oscar” for the most deserving sportsman of the year
A special touch? The helmet on the statuette in the center of the cockpit has an even more special touch: since the real trophy actually has a gold helmet, I wanted to decorate the design with gold leaf.
Delivering the gift - The moment of surprise
The presentation took place during dinner: seeing Gabriele discover the details of the painting, recognizing the symbols and memories, was a moment that truly moved me. The joy of seeing him read every detail and smile at the small personal touches made the gift truly unforgettable.
The drawing has been framed with a custom-cut mat and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, making the work ready to be displayed and preserved over time. Every element is designed to enhance the painting as a tailor-made gift and as a personal art object.

Why a commissioned illustration is a unique gift
A custom illustration allows you to transform passions, memories, and symbols from a person's life into a unique work of art. For a pilot or aviation enthusiast, a painting like this is not just decorative: it is a gift that excites, surprises, and tells the story of the recipient.
Those who look at the cockpit without knowing the recipient see a complex and fascinating design; those who know the story discover a universe of details, emotions, and memories. This dualism is what makes such a painting so special.
Creating a personalized gift for a pilot means combining a passion for flying, emotion, and personal storytelling. This cockpit is not just an illustration: it is Gabriele's life, encapsulated in a painting, a gesture of gratitude transformed into art.
If you are looking for a truly unique gift idea for a pilot or aviation enthusiast, an illustration of this kind is a perfect way to create something that will thrill them and last a lifetime.
